<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Mother’s Day is just an overrated commercialized day and we don’t celebrate it our family …. Said no mother ever!</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mother’s Day is all about celebrating all the wonderful things your mum has done for you and forgetting about the things that niggle at you. Because don’t forget many of us are mothers too and I’m sure our children feel the same way if not now definitely in the future!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I heard an advert on the radio the other day that basically went like this “if your mum told you she doesn’t want a present this year, just time with you is present enough”, means you aren’t the best gift chooser and please don’t waste money on something I don’t want.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now days it seems like we are spoilt for choice in the present department. Years ago a pot of chrysanthemums was the only choice you had for Mother’s Day. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You know what? It’s still a darn good choice.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chrysanthemums are traditionally given at Mother’s Day as they flower profusely during autumn and they contain the word mum! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They are so many varieties of chrysanthemums available today; there is surely one to suit every mum. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The US National Chrysanthemum Society has derived that there are 13 different types of flower forms and over 100 different colours.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5OhYjc2dfxg/U2TO8GAI8AI/AAAAAAAAB2I/ZlPhi6XF9mY/s1600/QT+Chrysanthmums.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5OhYjc2dfxg/U2TO8GAI8AI/AAAAAAAAB2I/ZlPhi6XF9mY/s1600/QT+Chrysanthmums.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a>Chrysanthemums are honestly one of the easiest plants to grow and are a perfect gift for green or brown fingered mums! Chrysanthemums have long lasting flowers and are relatively pest and disease free. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Potted chrysanthemums can flower for several weeks indoors but thrive best if placed in full sun. They can be grown in pots or in the garden. To keep them looking fantastic and to promote more flowers all spent flowers and discoloured leaves should be removed and liquid fertilised fortnightly. After flowering chrysanthemums should be cut back to about 15cm (6") high and be given some organic link complete organic fertiliser. They can have up to three flowerings a year.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you don’t like the traditional Chrysanthemum, Trevallan Lifestyle Centre is overflowing with living flowering gifts. Cyclamens, azaleas, pansies, anthruiums, orchids, camellias, roses are all in bloom, look fantastic and are easy to care for – even brown thumb mums should enjoy all of these! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Team any of these plants with a beautiful planter and you have the perfect present even if your mum doesn’t have a garden. Planters are a little different from normal pots in that they don’t have a hole in the bottom. With a planter you just place the plant inside the planter, no potting. They are great for indoors as you can still give your plants a good drink without having the water running everywhere problem. Just don’t over water!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With every present you give though, don’t forget to give a little of your time as well. Even though we are adults we are still our mum’s children. She just wants the best for us – so ignore the so called mothering insanity and give her a hug and kiss and let you know you love her. Because while a mother’s love is unconditional we as children need to reassure them that our love is unconditional too!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I love the cooler weather. I know the days are still warm but the nights have that glorious cool tinge.</span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
All the plants I love to surround myself with are now in bloom or coming into bloom.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
I love gift giving at this time of year. I don’t do cut flowers, of course! I want my gifts to last a little longer but I also know not everyone has a green finger so I don’t want them to stress about my gift.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
Which is why I always love giving <br />
Cyclamens.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z9usg4Z2HoQ/U2TMuX1Zu3I/AAAAAAAAB18/-IBc4fiv76M/s1600/IMG_1417.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z9usg4Z2HoQ/U2TMuX1Zu3I/AAAAAAAAB18/-IBc4fiv76M/s1600/IMG_1417.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a>Cyclamens are the perfect indoor or shade plant for the cooler months. They have a long continuous flowering period – usually from April until October. They are available in a rich tapestry of colours ranging from white to pink, red and mauve, some are even bi-coloured. The leaves are even pretty coming in a range of shapes - from broad to rounded, kidney, or heart shaped. They may be blotched, patterned, or even marbled on the upper surface.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
Cyclamens aren’t fussy which is why they are the perfect gift.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I always tell people “treat them cold keep them beautiful!”</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
Even though cyclamens grow fantastically indoors they love the cold; it seems to refresh and revitalise them. Every few days you should give your cyclamens a drink, wetting soil and foliage and put them outside for the night. They will appreciate the cold frosty morning!</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
I find just a good watering every few days is fine. I always like to place my cyclamens in a planter. Planters are a little different from normal pots in that they don’t have a hole in the bottom. With a planter you just place the plant inside the planter, no potting. They are great for indoors as you can still give your plants a good drink without having the water running everywhere problem. Just don’t over water.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
Cyclamens appreciate a regular liquid fertilise. I alternate every fortnight between Triple Boost and Silica and Potash Liquid fertilisers. The Triple Boost keeps them healthy and the Silica and Potash keeps them flowering. It is a good idea to remove the spent flowers. A spent cyclamen flower should never be cut off. Instead, remove tired blooms and stems by gently twisting off at the base and pulling them away from the main tuber.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pEyKuTNFwPg/U2TMK2SuzjI/AAAAAAAAB10/w0GWNTdEek4/s1600/cyclamen_asst_thumb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pEyKuTNFwPg/U2TMK2SuzjI/AAAAAAAAB10/w0GWNTdEek4/s1600/cyclamen_asst_thumb.jpg" /></a>Cyclamens grow from a tuber and tend to die down during our hot humid summer. If you are lucky though and find a cool, dry, shady spot in the garden (that isn’t taken by you) they can continue to grow. If your cyclamens do die down keep them in a cool, dry, shady position and water sparingly and hope they reappear in the cool months again. If they don’t regrow think about it like this – A bunch of cut flowers that lasted over three months. Wow now that’s value for money!</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
A cyclamen will warm your soul even on the coldest morning. So don’t forget to spread the love this weekend.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">For many of us Queenslanders though how to keep roses looking amazing feels like a state secret. <br /> <br />I often stare in awe at the pictures in magazines of roses elsewhere in Australia. How dare they have the climatic conditions to grow these plants successfully? I suppose we can’t have everything – at least the maroons can play football!</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have never claimed to know the secrets of growing roses in a climate where for about six months of the year we have what feels like 100% humidity.<br /> <br />Many rose growers out there will probably have a small heart attack at my way of growing roses but that’s ok, my way is the right way for me and maybe if you’ve never had any success in the past it may become the right way for you. <br /><br />The first thing I needed to realise was that my roses may never look like they do elsewhere. The humidity we suffer is the cause of most rose problems. No amount of sprays, fertilisers or correct planting techniques will change the problems humidity brings.<br /> <br />To combat most of the rose problems such as black spot, fungus, bud worm that occur during the warmer months I’d trim and fertilise. <br /> <br />I don’t spray. <br /> <br />During the really humid months most of my roses look like bare thorny sticks. <br /> <br />I find removing all the affected leaves, trimming back the plant and then fertilising with a slow release complete organic fertiliser like <a href="http://trevallanlifestyle.wix.com/trevallan#!online-store/c20zo/!/~/product/category=9063370&id=35329144" target="_blank">Organic Link</a> works fantastically. <br /><br /> I always trim my roses like I am cutting the flowers off for a long stemmed vase. I personally can’t stand long straggly bushes so I make sure all my roses get a good prune continuously throughout the year.<br /><br /> </span></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">After pruning you can use a product like Steriprune which is designed to protect wounds against infections and die back.<br /><br />Come the cooler months and my roses are thick and lush and full of flowers. <br /> <br />The few leaves that do get black spot or mould just get pulled off and when the flowers die, I still trim the stem right back like I am cutting it for a long stemmed vase.<br /> <br />During the cooIer months I might sometimes spray with a pyrethrum based spray for insects or Searles' Rose Pro Black Spot & Insect Killer which takes care of a myriad of insects and diseases. <br /> <br />My roses are in full sun in pots and in the ground. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I love gardening surprises, especially when it takes no real effort on my part. </span></span><br />

your bulb right way up (instructions are on the packets!) and cover with soil.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Sun is necessary. I like to put a little bit

Water the area
like a normal garden – making sure it’s wet but not a bog. Once the leaf or
flower starts to appear I use </span><a href="http://trevallanlifestyle.wix.com/trevallan#!online-store/c20zo/!/~/product/category=9063370&id=35331409" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Triple Boost liquid fertiliser</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"> weekly. lift, dig up, their bulbs each year and store them until the next season. I
don’t as I find I can’t store them very well and they end up dying, so I leave
mine in the ground.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Sometimes I dig them
up and break up the clumps so I can get more but then I usually replant them
straight away.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Last week on Trevallan Lifestyle Centre's Facebook page I posed the question "what gardening terms do you use that people think you've made up, don't understand or have a little giggle at your expense?"</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">There were some great examples given and I thought I'd enlighten you all with some gardening terms that I find I use and people think I have started to talk in my own special language.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Deciduous</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Deciduous, pronounced dih-sij-oo-uhs, is the term I am most often asked to explain. Deciduous means "falling off at maturity" or "tending to fall off", and it is typically used when talking about plants that lose their leaves seasonally. Many plants especially in cooler regions drop their leaves in autumn, have a dormant period through the winter and then come alive again in the spring. In some subtropical and arid regions plants lose their leaves during the dry season and have a dormant period until the wet season begins.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Active Constituent</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Active constituents are the substance/s in an agvet (agricultural and veterinary) chemical product primarily responsible for a product's biological or other effects.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">For example Glyphosate is the active constituent in most weed killers. In horticulture, companies register products with different trade names but you will often find the active constituent is the same. Trade names such as Yates Zero, Searles Dead Weed, Brunnings Weedkill all contain the same active constituent - glyphosate. When dealing with chemicals in gardening know your active constituents and you'll never have to rely on trade names again.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EMBOnONQHMc/UyGjRX7IrAI/AAAAAAAABvs/Z1IR_mTx8CQ/s1600/QT+enjoying+garden.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EMBOnONQHMc/UyGjRX7IrAI/AAAAAAAABvs/Z1IR_mTx8CQ/s1600/QT+enjoying+garden.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This next one can cause a few giggles - Bisexuality and plants</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">A Bisexual flower or perfect flower is when flower has both the essential whorls i.e., androecium and gynoecium (male and female reproductive units). Some examples are Lilies, Roses, Sweet Peas.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">When it comes to fruit and vegetables we generally use the term bisexual plant. So the plant has male and female flowers on it. You do not need two separate plants. For example a pumpkin will usually produce both male and female flowers and then hopefully insects pollinate the females and your pumpkins grow big and strong.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Self-watering pots</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Now unless you have gnomes in your garden doing all your dirty work there is no such thing as a self-watering pot. When you buy a self-watering pot you still have to water.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">In a self-watering pot you have a very large saucer or water well and the soil is held above the water well with a false bottom. The water well and the soil are usually connected by a wick of some sort.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">As water is used by the plant, capillary action draws more water up from below, exactly as much as is needed and no more. The soil has just the right amount of water all the time, but also maintains air pockets, which the plant roots also need. This is great for plants that don't like over watered as you just fill the bottom chamber.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">While self-watering pots are great I find they only really work once the plant has an established root ball.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This weekend talk dirty with someone and show off your new gardening knowledge.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Ixoras.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is an I love it or I hate it plant.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">My mum loves them. I must admit I verge on the opposing side. Why on earth would I write about them if they are on my not so favourite list?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Well as with many things these plants have grown on me over the years and as with many plants there seems to be a time and a place for them.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Ixoras are native to the tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world, with many of them in Tropical Asia. These plants typically can't handle frosts so if you are in a frost prone area these may not be for you. Some Ixoras are more prone to being cold affected while others can handle a little bit of cold.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Ixoras have dark green leathery leaves and produce large clusters of tiny flowers in the summer and autumn. The more common Ixoras usually have orange, gold, pink or red flowers. Ixoras prefer acidic soil and usually like a little shelter from our blazing summer sun. In saying that I have seen many gorgeous Ixoras growing in full sun and full shade. They don't mind being in pots or the ground.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QQJl9kHm0TE/UyGfi5nssFI/AAAAAAAABvg/BeZy7pSeSpA/s1600/190.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QQJl9kHm0TE/UyGfi5nssFI/AAAAAAAABvg/BeZy7pSeSpA/s1600/190.JPG" height="320" width="294" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I find the four most popular Ixoras are 'Prince of Orange', 'Pink Malay', dwarf orange and dwarf gold. Ixora williamsii is also popular as it has red flowers but it really dislikes the cold so is not commonly grown in Ipswich.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Prince of Orange has fiery orange flowers and can grow around two meters tall. The dwarf orange and yellow grow to around 1/2 metre. These look amazing in pots but I have seen them in gardens trimmed into a hedge and they look stunning when in flower. You can hardly see their green leaves.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">My favourite Ixora is Pink Malay. Why do I love it? Not just because it gets covered in pink flowers but because it is so hardy. This Ixora is absolutely amazing; growing to around a metre it can handle full sun and shade. It can grow in pots or the garden and I have seen it successfully growing in a shopping centre car park. Yes that's right, a shopping centre car park. A place that has no good soil, no mulch, no care, only rain fall and it looks glorious. This is why I love this plant.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Ixoras like all my plants get fertilised with Organic Link and Triple Boost. I use Searles' Peat 80 potting mix for pots and Searles' garden soil for gardens.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">There is a grub that likes to destroy your Ixora flower heads. There are a few ways to combat this - You can mix neem oil in with your fortnightly Triple Boost or I sometimes use Searles' Bug Beater. Eco-oil would also work. Sooty mould can also form on the leaves. This can be caused by scale and ants. Give your plant a really good soil drench and use a soil wetter if necessary. Fertilise and spray with Eco-oil. In a fortnight or so you should be able to hose off the soot and hopefully the ants would have dissipated.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This autumn brighten up your dull spots with shades of orange, yellow and pink.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I'm getting a little gardening bored. It's still too early to be planting my winter vegetables and my vegetable patch is cleaned, composted, mulched and waiting. My few gardens are fertilised, trimmed and waiting for cooler weather to start planting out more. My lawns are fertilised, soil wetted and weed killed - just waiting on rain to green them up. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">So what does one do when garden bored - they start dreaming big. I think I have about 40 seed packets of the things I'd like to grow this winter. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">So I may have gotten a little over excited. So how do I narrow it down? </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Lucky for me I came across an interesting article on the extremely high amounts of pesticide residue on frozen berries. The interesting thing was most of the residue of pesticides banned in Australia. This happens because most frozen berry companies get their berries from a variety of overseas sources. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The old mind clogs started turning over and after a bit more research I discovered the 'Dirty Dozen' and the 'Clean Fifteen'.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">These are two lists released by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) each year.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> The Dirty Dozen, a list of the fruits and vegetables likely to contain the highest amounts of pesticide residue. The Clean 15 is a list of fruits and vegetables least likely to contain pesticides.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The EWG take into account how people typically wash and prepare produce - for example, apples were washed and bananas peeled before testing.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The “Dirty Dozen” for 2013 were (number one being the most highest in pesticide residue)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">1. Apples</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">2. Strawberries</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">3. Grapes</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">4. Celery</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">5. Peaches</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">6. Spinach</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">7. Sweet bell peppers</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">8. Nectarines</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">9. Cucumbers</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">10. Potatoes</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">11. Cherry tomatoes</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">12. Hot peppers</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The EWG also added kale/collard greens and summer squash as a plus last year as they may contain organophosphate insecticides, which EWG characterizes as "highly toxic" and of special concern. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Did you know that all of these you can grow at home in pots or gardens?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Armed with this information planning my winter vegetable patch has become a little easier. Apart from cucumbers all of the 'Dirty Dozen' can be grown at home this winter. Cucumbers prefer warmer weather. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I honestly don't know why cherry tomatoes are on the list. I have no idea why anyone would need to spray these. If anyone has ever grown cherry tomatoes you would know how easy these plants are and how unsusceptible they are to disease and insects. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have also potted a raspberry, a fig and a dwarf peach just for fun too. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I know you are all wondering what the 'Clean fifteen' are. So here it is</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">1. Asparagus</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">2. Avocados</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">3. Cabbage</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">4. Cantaloupe</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">5. Sweet corn</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">6. Eggplant</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">7. Grapefruit</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">8. Kiwi</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">9. Mangoes</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">10. Mushrooms</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">11. Onions</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">12. Papayas</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">13. Pineapples</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">14. Sweet peas (frozen) </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">15. Sweet potatoes</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Don't get gardening bored, plan big and include the 'Dirty Dozen' in your backyard. </span></div>
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02639418327644245105noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2836113887784246467.post-84153321874697423872014-02-26T11:04:00.002-08:002014-03-01T03:48:42.185-08:00It's who you know<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I was horrified the other day to hear a story. The story basically went like this:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">"A customer was in the green life section of a rather large store that sold thousands of items including gardening necessities. She overheard a staff member telling another customer to use a particular potting mix as it was the best on the market. Curious, she moved closer to see what they were talking about only to find out the staff member was promoting composted fertiliser as potting mix. The unsuspecting customers bought three bags along with plants. "</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">What horrifies me is this particular product even states on the bag 'this is NOT a potting mix'. These first time gardeners were about to make a huge mistake that would probably cost them the life of their plants. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is not the real problem. The real problem occurs when these people kill these plants due to wrong information. They then get upset at the waste of time, energy and most of all money spent on gardening only to have everything die. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The correct information is so important. The best place to get correct information is at a place that specialises in that particular subject.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you want correct and helpful advice on gardening - visit your local garden centre. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Garden centre's have fully qualified expert staff. Staff who are not only experts but who are local and have all suffered the same gardening problems that you suffer. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">A common question I am asked is "why didn't my fruit trees fruit profusely or if they did why was the fruit misshapen?" Or "why didn't my camellias and azaleas flower as well this year?" Or even "why are all my coloured foliaged plants like crotons and dracaenas losing their colour?"</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The answer is usually quite simple - Your garden just needs some TLC and a little Potash!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0f03M0LinOQ/UwP2l9I58XI/AAAAAAAABpU/_PeJa3PKEzw/s1600/1508168_933404533371444_1809585552_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0f03M0LinOQ/UwP2l9I58XI/AAAAAAAABpU/_PeJa3PKEzw/s1600/1508168_933404533371444_1809585552_n.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Potassium Sulphate or Sulphate of Potash is commonly called Potash. It is an essential element necessary to the lives of all plants.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">It aids in disease resistance and frost protection by strengthening the plants cell walls. It helps in seed and root development. It encourages strong new growth and helps with the formation of flower buds and fruit.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Potash can improve the quality and the colour of flowers and enhances the formation of proteins and sugars in fruit. Potash can even help plants with slender stems and large flower heads such as Iceland poppies and gerberas hold their heads erect.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Potash defective cues can be seen in a number of ways in your plant. Your plants might be showing signs of overall weakness especially in its stem. It could have yellowing leaf margins and grow more slowly. It could also be disease prone and its fruit and flowers will be small and poorly coloured and sometimes tasteless.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Don't confuse a potash deficiency though with an unhealthy plant. Always make sure you have given your plant some complete slow release organic fertiliser like Organic Link first.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">It seems that many Australian soils are low in potassium (potash).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Complete fertilisers, whether they are chemical or organic, usually contain potash. Organic Link contains potash. An N:P:K ratio can usually be found on the fertiliser label. A very quick explanation of the N:P:K ratio is - N stands for Nitrogen (greening, growing), P Phosphorus (roots) and K Potassium (fruiting, flowering).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you use mainly a manure based fertiliser like blood and bone or chicken manure you will need to add potash as these products don’t naturally contain it.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Potash also is available by itself in a liquid form and a granular form. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">The liquid form is added to water and used as a foliar spray. Used like this it is quick acting but not long lasting and needs to be repeated on a fortnightly basis. This is best for promoting flowers especially on annuals. I use Plant of Health's <b>Potash and Silica. </b></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">The granular form is added to the soil and watered in. The granular is slower acting but lasts a lot longer. This is best for correcting deficiencies, promoting fruit and stimulating coloured foliage. We use Searles' <b>Potash.</b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This weekend I want you all to get some granular potash and go a little silly in your gardens. Your winter blooming plants like camellias and azaleas will love you and your citrus trees will adore you.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Did you make a New Year's resolution? Have you kept it?</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I read a funny saying the other day about New Year's resolutions. It read "My New Years resolution is to become a unicorn". I think many of us tend to over exaggerate our expectations of ourselves. In doing this our New Years resolutions become a bit of a fantasy. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">For this reason I don't make New Years resolutions anymore. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I like to say instead - I have set my intentions for the year ahead. </span></div>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /><span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">So if right now you had to set your intentions for year ahead, what would they be?</span></span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D8RBrmZaaKU/UueRvHa7ySI/AAAAAAAABOs/S02mdhfkiqA/s1600/IMG_0691.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span></a><span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Would any of those intentions be green orientated?</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Is this the year for that vegetable patch or to start landscaping the back yard. Maybe it's something really simple like this year I intend to start caring for my plants more.</span></div>
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D8RBrmZaaKU/UueRvHa7ySI/AAAAAAAABOs/S02mdhfkiqA/s1600/IMG_0691.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D8RBrmZaaKU/UueRvHa7ySI/AAAAAAAABOs/S02mdhfkiqA/s1600/IMG_0691.JPG" height="213" width="400" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Nothing too over the top - we don't want yards full of unicorns!</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I think the first step is being honest with ourselves. So many of us don't like being wrong. I of course don't have a problem with being wrong because I'm always right......</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I find my biggest hurdle in sharing gardening knowledge is asking people to be honest about their soil.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">In theory we all water well and fertilise our plants. But how much of this water and fertiliser is really getting into our soils and how much is the plant really getting?</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">With this continued horrible heat we are experiencing our plants will dry out much sooner than we think. Plus this heat and wind has a tendency to suck any excess moisture out of the soil and foliage of the plants. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Soils can become hydrophobic so quickly and this hydrophobia can lead to unhealthy plants and sometimes even the death of a plant. Even if you think you are a great waterer - hydrophobic soil can strike anywhere, anytime. It can happen in gardens, lawns and pots.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The problem with hydrophobic soil is that it doesn't just stop water from getting to your plant it can also stop fertilisers from penetrating the soil.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">While mulching and composts can help, I find the quickest and easiest way to combat hydrophobic soil is with a soil wetter.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I know I've mentioned this before but I see this being a common problem. I also know from experience what a difference soil wetters can make. I use <a href="http://www.searles.com.au/Watermanagement.html" target="_blank">Searles Penetraide </a>at Trevallan Lifestyle Centre and at home. There is a granular and a liquid. I prefer the liquid, my mother and sister prefer the granules. Both do a fantastic job.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Another product I love to use in this heat is my liquid fertiliser '<a href="http://batphone.com.au/images/articles/ProductSpecSheets/silicapotash.pdf" target="_blank">Silica and Potash</a>'.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Regular use of Silica and Potash Foliar Spray reduces heat and frost damage as well as wind burn. It improves plant growth, flowering and fruit count. It also makes plants physically tougher – tough plants are more resistant to pest and fungal attack.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;" /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-touch-callout: none;">
<span style="-webkit-touch-callout: none; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This weekend get rid of the unicorns and get a healthy thriving garden instead.</span><br />

Legumes, for instance, supply nitrogen because their roots form an association with soil-borne bacteria that can transform nitrogen from the atmosphere into nitrogen compounds that can be used by plants. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Every Wednesday on </span><a href="http://www.facebook.com/trevallan"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Trevallan's Facebook</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> page is "Ask it Wednesday?" A day I leave the page open to any questions the followers can throw at me and I attempt to answer them.<br /><br />It's become a much anticipated day with many people tuning in to see what has been asked and of course what I've answered.<br /><br />I have developed such a great personal rapport with so many of Trevallan's followers that I forget to some I am just a business on a computer screen.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This became evident when a few weeks ago on "Ask it Wednesday?" I was asked "What's my Horticultural background?"<br /><br />I realised at this point that so many of you may not realise who I am - the face behind Trevallan's web presence.<br /><br />I am me.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fU0SLWQu-Dk/UlvXCBpyPLI/AAAAAAAAASM/i8luGI7gtUM/s1600/chelsea-21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fU0SLWQu-Dk/UlvXCBpyPLI/AAAAAAAAASM/i8luGI7gtUM/s200/chelsea-21.jpg" width="133" /></a>How to describe me, well first you need to know my family.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I come from a family of gardeners. My knowledge is book based but most comes from being surrounded by it all my life. It's amazing what you can learn just by listening.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
</span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">My grandparents were gardeners. Their vegetable patch sustained the family, so no outside food had to be bought in apart from meat. My grandfather also loved to fiddle. His true love lay with camellias and azaleas and he self taught himself to cross breed, graft and do cuttings. He was also a lawn fanatic. Think bowling green, see my grandfathers lawn!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">My parents before going into retail had a successful landscaping business 'Trevallan Landscapes' that would have been in operation for about 30 years today had my father not died in 2000. Trevallan Landscapes was high in demand and I remember my father travelling all over Queensland doing landscaping work - private and commercial. Working for him was also a great way for me to earn pocket money as I grew up.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I finished my bachelor business degree in 1999 and after my father died began working at Trevallan Lifestyle Centre full time.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Since than my pieces of paper have increased - I have a Certificate III in horticulture, am a Certified Nursery Professional, am chemcert qualified, have been a <a href="http://www.trevallan.blogspot.com.au/2012_04_01_archive.html" target="_blank">national finalist for Young Horticulturalist of year </a>and been a <a href="http://www.trevallan.blogspot.com.au/2012/10/pussy-cat-pussy-cat-where-have-you-been_2.html" target="_blank">HAL emerging Leader</a>. I am also a member of the Horticultural Media Association Qld and am a committee member for local garden club <a href="http://www.glebegardenclubipswich.com.au/" target="_blank">'Glebe Garden Club'</a>.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">As quickly as my pieces of paper increase so does my workload. I now write a weekly gardening column for Ipswich's local paper "The Queensland Times", I write for the gardening magazine 'About the Garden'. I write this blog, manage Trevallan's social media - Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest and this blog plus work at Trevallan. Lucky for all of us Trevallan is run by my mum who works there tirelessly so I can do all this other fun stuff! I also love giving gardening related talks to social and gardening clubs.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">While I've been paper collecting so has Trevallan - over the years Trevallan has won a few awards, one I am most proud of is Best Small Garden Centre in Qld in 2010.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">As many of us know knowledge isn't gained just from reading a few books. Knowledge is made up of a lifetime of asking questions and determining what you believe is right answer.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I attend as many industry run events and read as much as I can so I can try to stay onto of new information, plant releases. I also try to take the time to listen to my customers, my growers, my suppliers as I find they've tried and tested many things I wouldn't get a chance to try in my lifetime.<br />
<br />
Basically I Live it breathe it!<br />
<br />
But horticulture isn't my only love - aromatherapy is another passion. In between all my paper getting for horticulture I also completed - <span class="fsm fwn fcg">Certificate Four Massage Therapy, which included Aromatherapy I. </span><br />
<br />
In October 2012 I <a href="http://www.trevallan.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/creating-sacred-space.html" target="_blank">won a world wide competition to create my own essential oil blend</a>. This blend '<a href="http://trevallan.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/lucky-potion.html" target="_blank">wisdom</a>' is produced by internationally renowned aromatherapy company <a href="http://www.perfectpotion.com.au/Online-Shop/Products/wisdom-blend.aspx" target="_blank">Perfect Potion</a> and sold at Trevallan as well as world wide via Perfect potion stores and online trading.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xwOVzMh30zE/Tkufhf7G77I/AAAAAAAAABU/6h_vetIt_1s/s1600/qtw23.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xwOVzMh30zE/Tkufhf7G77I/AAAAAAAAABU/6h_vetIt_1s/s320/qtw23.png" width="314" /></a>Life isn't just about fertilising and sweet smells because in-between all that I'm nurturing a young family with three children six and under.<br />
<br />
So that's me. <br />
<br />
The girl behind the computer screen. </div>
</span><br />

of us are aware that plants require mineral nutrients for their growth and
development. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, the macro elements, the names
that usually appear on fertilizer packages, whether you use organic or chemical
fertilizers.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It is sometimes assumed
that they are the "important" nutrients.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>These macro elements are just consumed by the
plants in large quantities. Trace elements, micro nutrients can often be
forgotten about as they are required in minuscule quantities.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">

it comes to macro elements being the most important nutrients, nothing could be
further from the truth. Trace elements like Manganese, Iron, Zinc, and Copper,
are every bit as vital to the plants metabolism as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous.
They have essential functions and so a deficiency in even one element will
adversely affect the healthy growth of the plant. Strangely enough some trace
elements when present in excessive concentrations are actually poisonous for
plants. </span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Common gardening
practices (such as liming acid soils) can contribute to widespread occurrence
of micronutrient deficiencies in plants by decreasing the availability of the
micronutrients present in the soil. Also, extensive use of glyphosate (most
common weed killer) is increasingly suspected to impair micronutrient uptake by
plants, especially with regard to manganese, iron and zinc.</span></span></span></div>

I bet there is undissolved particles in it, well there was for me with most of the detergents I tried.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>These undissolved particles are called fillers. These fillers can not only affect your washing, they can corrode your machine and even affect our health.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>These fillers can also affect your septic tanks and cause problems with your grey water.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I don’t honestly know how it came about. All I remember was it started with a graduation present. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
</span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.perfectpotion.com.au/" target="_blank">Perfect Potion </a>was a little shop in the Elizabeth Arcade in Brisbane. Mum and I went there and she bought me essential oils as a year 12 graduation present. Ylang Ylang was one of of those oils. I had a candle oil burner. A few years later I upgraded to an electric oil vaporizer. It was ugly yellow; there wasn’t much choice back then!</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
No matter where I lived I always had my oils. Slowly as my interest grew so did my extensive library and my desire to try all the oils and all the combinations. I enjoyed infusing my home with the scents I created. I loved it when friends visited and they’d say ‘your house always smells so good’. When I lived in an apartment the girls upstairs used to tell me how much they enjoyed walking past my door as there was always beautiful scents wafting out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lucky for me as my interest grew Perfect Potion flourished. More and more stores opened, more oils were released, more blends were available, more products. Quench my scent thirst, no, it only fueled it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There was nothing more I enjoyed than spending an afternoon in a Perfect Potion Store.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All the while it never entered my head to pursue it any more than a hobby. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One day the opportunity arose to stock Perfect Potion at <a href="http://trevallanlifestyle.wix.com/trevallan" target="_blank">Trevallan Lifestyle Centre</a>. We have never looked back. It has been an amazing journey being a part of a company that seems to only take huge steps forward.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then something strange happened - Perfect Potion ran a <a href="http://www.perfectpotion.com.au/Home/Create-your-own-Sacred-Space-Blend-Competition.aspx" target="_blank">competition</a>, a competition unlike any other. A competition open to all Australian and Japanese residents. The competition was to create your own essential oil blend to be sold under the Perfect Potion banner. They had never offered this before; all the blends sold by Perfect Potion are Perfect Potion’s creations. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wow.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But I couldn’t create a blend. What do I know? Perfect Potion even ran some classes on the art of blending to help. I couldn’t attend them. I even convinced myself it would be pointless entering. Then I got excited and started playing around with some of my oils. I then got completely disheartened as time and time again my combinations made me gag!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
See the competition wasn’t just about choosing some essential oils. You had to work out the perfect combination of oils and then how much of each oil. Plus the scent you were trying to create was to embody your scared space.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hang on I live in a small house with kids, animals – what scared space? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My books! It always comes back to books. Books are my scared space. Books are my escape. At the time of the competition my little library was being built. So now I had a sacred space but no scent. I gave up. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then a few days before close of competition inspiration struck. I got it. The oils just worked, the combination, the amounts. It worked. But I still hesitated. It was late that night I finally got enough guts to enter. And swoosh like that the email was sent, the competition closed and I promptly forgot all about it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You see I had a baby on the way. Number three to be exact. The day the winners of Perfect Potion’s competition was announced I was a little busy. I was in labour.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I finally got my head out of the clouds I read an email “Firstly, a massive CONGRATULATIONS for being the winner of the Create Your Own Sacred Space Blend Competition”.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I thought “what’s going on. Who won the competition? They aren’t telling me the names”. I thought it was a generic email sent to everyone who entered informing them of the winner. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Silly me. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tears may have flowed when it set in.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Something I loved, something that is so important and a part of me just became real. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The day that I received that little bottle adeptly named ‘Wisdom’, my heart skipped a beat. Just thinking about it now makes me well up with tears. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It wasn’t just that I won it was the recognition I also got from the creator of <a href="http://www.perfectpotion.com.au/blog/tag/sacred-space" target="_blank">Perfect Potion Sal Battaglia</a>. A man who I admire for all that he and his team have achieved over the years. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sal wrote ‘<i>Choosing the sacred space blend has been so difficult for me as there were so many wonderful ideas and beautiful blends…. I was so impressed with the depth and complexity of the blend. It is such a simple formula…..I absolutely loved the blend …’</i> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was and still am on top of the world about this.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sometimes when I’m having a bad day I just go to the Perfect Potion website and read the Wisdom Blend synopsis ‘Created by Chelsea Van Rijn from Australia, this blend represents her library which is a sacred place of learning, a place to gather thoughts, to be inspired and become wise.’</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I read it and think I did that. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When we have it in the vaporiser at Trevallan and customers comment on how beautiful it smells I love seeing their faces when I tell them it’s a blend I created. I’m sure some of them don’t believe me and think I’m a looney!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will be eternally grateful to Sal and the Perfect Potion Team for giving me this opportunity. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am so lucky to have one of my secret dreams realised and to be able to share it with others.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But what’s in my lucky potion?</div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large; font-weight: normal; text-align: justify;">My winning essential oil blend ‘Wisdom’ is a combination of my four favourite essential oils – Ylang Ylang, vetiver, fragonia and patchouli.</span></h2>
<h2>
<br />
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.perfectpotion.com.au/Online-Shop/Products/wisdom-blend.aspx" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Perfect Potion</a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> describes the blend as ‘The deep musty and exotic aromas of vetiver and patchouli together with the intoxicating and arousing aroma of ylang ylang and fresh, vibrant scent of fragonia create a truly mystical and sacred space.’</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
But why these oils? What do they mean?</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Ylang Ylang is my all-time favourite oil. It has a sweet floral scent. To me it embodies all that is passionate, sensuous and uplifting. Whenever I wear it I feel confident and almost bewitching. It is believed to be useful in creating feelings of peace and dispelling anger. It is a scent that embodies all that is good about femininity.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Fragonia was an oil that was very new to me but I instantly fell in love with it. It’s an Australian native essential oil obtained from Agonis fragrans. I feel Fragonia has an ability to work at a deep level, releasing both physical and emotional blockages. It’s very soothing and calming oil. I have found it sometimes referred to as the magic oil as it seems to work on whatever level that is needed to help the body, mind, or spirit find balance.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Vetiver, it smells like the earth. Most people are put off by it. I love it. I guess that’s why I love my job. I feel just like the earth there are layers to it. Coincidently vetiver is very useful for grounding and centering a person and opening them up to their core wisdom.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Patchouli is described as soothing, calming and somewhat hypnotizing scent. It always makes me feel like I’ve escaped to the orient when I smell it. Patchouli oil has a grounding and balancing effect on the emotions and banishes lethargy, while sharpening the wits, fighting depression and anxiety.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
This is all my own interpretations of the oils and their meanings I am no way a qualified aromatherapist.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
With these four oils I was trying to create a scared space for everyone. A place we could escape to to find ourselves. A place where we are free to be us.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
When I vaporise ‘Wisdom’ at home it fills my house with such a warm comforting scent. I feel at peace and safe in my own surrounds. I love it when I put it on in the mornings and then I go out. I can smell it as I get to the front door and know I’m home. My shoulders drop and I feel relaxed.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Just recently ‘<a href="http://www.optimumhealthclinic.com.au/">Optimum Health</a>’, a natural therapies clinic in Ipswich has asked to use it for their meditation classes they are starting soon.</div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
I truly feel this blend will ‘create a truly mystical and sacred space’ for you.</div>
</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />

<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The first time I heard the words seed
potato I imagined a packet of seeds looking somewhat like bean seeds! How wrong
I was.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Seed Potatoes are what you use to
grow potatoes and look like baby potatoes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>About 1kg of certified seed should produce about 10kgs of potato.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The varieties of certified seed potato
seem endless – Dutch Cream, Sebago, Pontiac and Desiree are just a few.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There are red ones, pink ones and even blue
ones!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some are good for boiling or
mashing, some are better for baking and frying, there are even some that are
perfect for microwaving! Some are all-rounders.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>How you like your potatoes cooked is how you choose which variety to
grow.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Why should I buy certified seed
potato, why can’t I just plant the sprouts that grow from my potatoes from the
grocery store?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">

diseases: bacterial, viral, and fungal; and some of these are passed on through
potato tubers. Plant viral infections are persistent and can not only affect
your potato plants but your neighbourhood’s plants as well.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>All plants in the potato family can be
affected like tomatoes, eggplants and chillies. These diseases can also

Amanda Foy (Foyster's Principal) is a communications specialist. <a href='http://www.facebook.com/foysters'>Foysters Facebook</a> page states I help people and businesses communicate. What's your super power? <br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>Why is helping businesses and people communicate a super power and why is it relevant to me? <br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>It's because Amanda realises that communicating with people is more than just speaking to someone. It is everything visual and verbal to do with your business or personal life. <br /></span></p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>Her passion for this is evident and she started me a on a wonderful journey that hopefully in time will not only improve my personal communication skills but also my ability to communicate to the world at large why I think Trevallan is an amazing experience.<br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>The other place I've been is the Stamford Hotel in Brisbane. Now if you don't know this hotel think luxury, style and taste all on the banks of the Brisbane River. Why was I here – the dirty finger nailed, sandal wearing gardener? <br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>I was recently lucky enough to be chosen to be a part of a group <a href='https://www.facebook.com/HorticultureNextGeneration'>'Horticulture – The Next Generation. Emerging Leaders'</a>. The group consists of 25 people from across Australia that belong to the vast horticulture industry – florists, farmers, landscapers, researchers, wholesalers and retailers. <br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>The first workshop was held at the Samford Plaza and was run by Russell Cummings of <a href='http://www.sbdbusiness.com.au/'>Strategic Business Development</a> and <a href='http://www.mindshop.com/'>Mindshop</a>.<br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>Wow, what an amazing and mind boggling two days.<br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>I think I'm still recovering and trying to put a lot of what I learnt into practice. What made this workshop amazing was that I actually came away with useful tools that I want to put into place. Plus Russell took a picture of my plan of attack over the next twelve months and will be checking up on me so another reason to get my butt into gear. <br /></span></p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>One thing Russell helped quantify for me was "What makes Trevallan Lifestyle Centre so Special" or more importantly "Why do I do what I do?". Paragraph after paragraph was written but he wanted a simple one liner. How do I put all that is Trevallan into one line? Then it came to me, it was so simple.<br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>The Trevallan Lifestyle Centre Team wants to make YOU happy. <br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>I could now write the endless paragraphs on how we want to make you happy but it doesn't really matter because everyone is different and has different needs and wants. <br /></span></p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>The main thing is we want you leave Trevallan with a smile on your face. We really do want to give your life some TLC.<br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>So where does all of this lead me, what does it really mean? <br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>It means that over the coming months you will begin to see some changes occurring. Nothing to be afraid of, more excited about (that's more of a reminder to me)! <br /></span></p><p> <br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>I'll be using <a href='http://www.facebook.com/trevallan'>Trevallan's facebook</a> page effectively. I'll be communicating with you the 'likers'. I'll be sharing with you all the things that make up Trevallan. I'll be helping you and giving advice. I'll be sharing things that make me smile. Hopefully at the end of each day one of my posts if not all would have made you smile too.<br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>If you are signed up for our email you would have received our new format newsletter. I'm hoping this is another way I can connect with you. I know many of you can't physically stop by the shop so hopefully through the newsletters and Facebook I can ignite your passion not only for gardening but for all things beautiful.<br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>I've begun the process of a web page that will also include online ordering. So when you can't make it to Trevallan we can make it to you. <br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>If you stop by the shop you will be seeing some changes too. You all know I love to redesign but usually the reigns are held tightly in place… well the reins have been cut loose. So there's been some changes already with a few more to come. Many are simple and you may not even realise and some are standoutish but hopefully all in all the changes will make your visit to Trevallan even more enjoyable than before. Those smiles can be bigger and brighter.<br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>I may not have been to London but it sure feels like I've had a rock stars whirl wind tour. <br /></span></p><p><br /> </p><p><span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS; font-size:12pt'>Here's to smiling more and a hell of a lot of TLC!</span></p></span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02639418327644245105noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2836113887784246467.post-41850705783927500122012-06-05T20:21:00.000-07:002012-06-05T20:21:58.093-07:00Trevallan's Search is Over<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Deb's garden really is inspiring and beautiful with its hidden nooks and delightful plants. A masterpiece that is constantly changing and evolving. If you are lucky enough to live near Ipswich Deb has an Open Garden in October so you can all visit and see her amazing handiwork. (I'll post more details soon) Deb has won an amazing array of prizes - a <span lang="en-AU" style="font-family: "Gill Sans MT"; language: en-AU; line-height: 114%; mso-ansi-language: en-AU;">Searles Pack – 30lt Peat 80, Five in One 30lt, 7kg<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Penitraide, a </span><span lang="en-AU" style="font-family: "Gill Sans MT"; language: en-AU; line-height: 114%; mso-ansi-language: en-AU;">Pohlmans Plants Pack, a </span><span lang="en-AU" style="font-family: "Gill Sans MT"; language: en-AU; line-height: 114%; mso-ansi-language: en-AU;">Plant of Health Pack – 4lt Triple Boost, 10kg Organic Link and a </span><span lang="en-AU" style="font-family: "Gill Sans MT"; language: en-AU; line-height: 114%; mso-ansi-language: en-AU;">Trevallan Gift Voucher.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">A big congratulations needs to be given to the other finalists for they too had amazing gardens. What I loved most about this year's finalists was that all showed not only a love and enthusiasm for gardening but their gardens were all so very different.</span><br />

always on the hunt for the perfect plant. You know the one – grows in full sun
or part shade, does not require me to fight with my twisted and kinked hose
every day to water it, looks good even when I forget to fertilise, flowers most
of the year, doesn’t have a scent so I can’t drive the neighbours batty and
doesn’t require me to trim it to make it look good!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Oh, and I forgot to mention only grows about
a metre so it looks good in a garden or in a pot and it doesn’t mind the cold
or the heat! <o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />

<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">Are you ready for it? The perfect plant is called Pieris Japonica

the perfect plant, you must make sure you ask for Pieris japonica 'Temple

almost continuous flowering that makes this plant perfect. The flowers can
start their show as early as March.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
plant becomes covered with small lime green bell shaped buds that as the
weather cools grow and open to form pure white bells that appear to be dripping
off the plant. The flowers remind me of the lily of the valley flower. By the
time the warmer weather kicks in, the white bells have dropped leaving the
greenish ‘bell holders’ still on the bush for another month or so.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It almost seems that the plant is in flower
for more than half a year due to its three phase flowering process.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

fabulous.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It can thrive in some shade
too. As </span><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Pieris Japonica 'Temple Bells' won’t win any medals for fastest
growing plant but not the slowest growing plant either - you can expect it to
